Joint DAWN Feminist and PANG report on Japan’s ocean dumping of nuclear wastewater

Japan started dumping over 1.3 million metric tonnes of radioactive wastewater into the Pacific, a move that threatens the health and livelihoods of Pacific Island communities.
The dumping began in August 2023, and while Japan claims the water has been treated, independent scientists have identified major flaws in the treatment and testing process. The experts strongly advised against the ocean dumping plan and proposed three feasible alternative safe ways for Japan to dispose of the radioactive wastewater – on land, within its own jurisdiction.
Ahead of Japan’s review at #CEDAW89, DAWN Feminist and PANG have released a joint report that highlights the risks of serious human rights violations including transboundary and intergenerational harms as well as reputational harms posed by Japan’s commencement on 24 August 2023 of its controversial 30-40 year plan to dump more than 1.3 million metric tonnes of radionuclide-contaminated waste water into the Pacific Ocean.
